Remote Testing
Real user feedback for special functions and information on the website.
Aims
The main aim is to evaluate usability by having people carrying out special usage tasks.
By conducting specific surf tasks, users put special functions, new functionalities, and parts or the whole website to test on their home computer. While surfing the web, users can give open ended feedback to any (sub)site they come across, meanwhile click and surf data are recorded in the background. Combined analysis of these two data sets makes the evaluation of usability issues possible by remote contact. On the basis of these results, usability problems can be addressed.
Results
- Evaluation of functions and processes.
- Qualitative insights for single steps of a surf task.
- Analysis of user behaviour.
- Optimisation suggestions for classical usability criteria, such as wording, navigation, design, intuitive understanding etc.
When to use Remote Testing?
- Testing an existing website - how do core processes perform from a user perspective?
- Testing directly after a relaunch - have process optimisations/design alterations had a positive effect on usability? What else could be improved?
- Testing of a prototype - which of the planned processes and functions should be changed, and in which way, before launching the site?
How does Remote Testing work?
- Users are invited directly on the website being tested, or on any website, via e-mail or an online access panel that links them to the test site.
- Test participants evaluate every site they visit or any process they use with the evaluation tool. When clicking on the buttons “I like!” or “Problem!” open ended statements are requested from the user in order to gain a more detailed evaluation.
- Click and surf data are recorded in the background. Thus the analysis of user surf paths when fulfilling certain tasks on the website is possible.
