Online Delphi Survey

The use of expert knowledge

Objectives

Delphi techniques help to validate working hypotheses from market observations and consumer surveys as well as to identify trends for market development. Expert knowledge can be incorporated and the market potential can be estimated in a short space of time.

Questions

  • Assessment of incidence rate for particular market events and trends.
  • Estimate of quantitative results.
  • Development of qualitative, long-term scenarios (e.g. trend extrapolation).
  • Validation of previous research results (e.g. validation of group discussions).
  • Scenario techniques (e.g. consideration of the market situation by varying the distribution strategy).
  • Alternatively: apply the results from one country to another.

Process

  • Step 1: Establishment of initial results
    - from other surveys.
    - from market observations.
    - from preliminary surveys of delphi participants.
  • Step 2: contact panel participants by e-mail: Feedback to the initial results in form of a short online questionnaire.
  • Step 3: Evaluation / summary of the results from step 2
    - quantitative: degree of acceptance / likelihood of the proposed results.
    - qualitative: reasons for the differing opinions.
  • Step 4 and 5: repetition of results from 2 / 3, until a sufficient consensus or a clear division of opinion groups has been reached.

Advantages

  • Fast results.
  • Cost effective solution, as it is easy to administer and evaluate.
  • No "red tape"
  • Good accessibility, as the survey can be answered whenever the respondent has time.
  • Especially for difficult to reach experts.
  • Interesting added value for respondents.
  • High willingness to take part.
